Data isn’t data until it’s stored in two places – here’s how to make backup simple
Welcome to Day 36 of 100 days to business improvement…
Business improvement category: SMART TECHNOLOGY
Advicelet benefit: Peace of mind, as well as saving yourself from a potential irrecoverable business disaster. Data backup is something you cannot afford not to do.
The following statistics were gathered from various sources:
- 6% of all PCs will suffer an episode of data loss in any given year. (The Cost Of Lost Data, David M. Smith)
- 31% of PC users have lost all of their files due to events beyond their control.
- 34% of companies fail to test their tape backups, and of those that do, 77% have found tape back-up failures.
- 93% of companies that lost their data center for 10 days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster.
- 50% of businesses that found themselves without data management for this same time period filed for bankruptcy immediately. (National Archives & Records Administration in Washington)
- Hardware or system failure accounts for 78% of all data loss.
You’ll find plenty of differing numbers if you look around – but the facts are clear. People are generally not good at backing up their data in a disciplined, regular fashion and lose hours and hours of time, as well as personal memories, $£’s of music and multimedia and we all know that sinking feeling when you realise what’s happened – it’s not pleasant… But, it’s so easily avoided.
Today’s advicelet looks at a really simple, free way of backing up your data to an external hard drive, which could be applied to your own personal data, or a company server. In addition, we explore the best ways of backing up or storing your data in the Cloud in the follow up.
